Some crystals should not get wet or be left in water for long periods of time. Unwelcome results may be fractures and breaking, loss of shine and/or dissolving enough to produce a toxic chemical. ALWAYS research your crystals!
The best way to determine whether a crystal can handle the water is by using the Mohrs hardness scale. An online search will quickly tell you where on the scale from 1 to 10 your crystal falls. The lower the number, the softer the crystal and the more likely it is to be water-soluble. If a crystal falls below 5 on the Mohs scale, it is probably best to keep it out of the water. A crystal with a hardness of 6 or more would most-likely be considered water safe.
The following is a basic list of crystals that should not get wet: Ammolite, Angelite, Azurite, Calcite (all varieties), Celestite, Fluorite, Halite (Rock Salt), Lepidolite, Malachite, Rhodocrosite, Selenite
Some crystals should not get wet, simply because they may rust. Magnetite, Pyrite, Hematite are just a few that contain iron and copper. If these stones do get wet, simply dry them off as soon as possible to prevent rusting.
Crystal Infused Water
Infusing water with your crystals is another way to receive subtle and mental benefits. For example, if you were to use Smoky Quartz, you may feel stress relief. Use Sodalite, when you need to be confident in speaking. In addition to drinking crystal water, it can also be given to pets, used for cooking or used to water your plants.
As a beginner, you should never ingest water that has been directly infused with crystals or gemstones. This is because they can dissolve enough to become toxic when water is added. To be safe, the following are the basics for infusing water, indirectly:
•Select a crystal with a specific need in mind. It is recommended that you choose no more than three crystals. Whether you are making the infused water for yourself or someone else, choose stones that have a clear and powerful purpose. In deciding this, ask questions such as:
What problem do I want to address? Example: I want to find love
What am I currently feeling about this want/need? Example: Anxiety, fear, depression
What qualities do I need in order to overcome these feelings? Example –Grounding, courage, motivation
Answering these questions will direct you to the stones that will help. Rely on your knowledge and intuition will guide you.
•Place your crystal in a glass jar, then place that jar within another vessel (I.e. a large glass mixing bowl)
•Fill the bowl (not the smaller jar) with spring water – If necessary, cover with a cloth made from natural fibers to prevent leaves, dirt, etc. from getting in - Don’t use metal or plastic.
•Leave the vessel out to brew in the sun to receive solar energy throughout the day (sunrise to sunset) or under the moonlight for lunar energy (sunset to sunrise.)
•Once the brewing is complete, remove the glass jar containing the crystal. Pour the infused water into a glass, water bottle or pitcher for consumption.
On the market are accessories made for crystal infusion. A popular version has a twin glass chamber design. This keeps crystals separate from the water and makes infusing water so much easier! It is recommended that you still brew under sun or moonlight as mentioned above. Be sure to select a bottle that has no metal or plastic in it's construction.
